Question:

Why wasn't Veronica of the Cross buried with a Latin Tridentine funeral Mass?

SMWA response:

Veronica died a loyal daughter of the Church and her funeral mass was celebrated in Infant Jesus Roman Catholic Church in Port Jefferson, Long Island, New York, on Monday, August 7, 1995. This is the diocese of Rockville Center. Veronica was buried in Mount St. Mary's Roman Catholic Cemetery in Queens, New York.

Bishop McGann rarely allowed the Tridentine funeral Mass and on short notice it would have been impossible. Surprisingly, Veronica's passing was rather unexpected and quick. Although She was suffering immensely, we always thought she would rebound as she did so many times in the past.

As you know, each year we have a Tridentine Mass offered on Veronica's anniversary. The New York Archdiocese permits a weekly indult Mass, and so, in August each year we have one of these Masses offered for Veronica of the Cross by priest-devotees, Fr. Robert Skurla and Fr. Robert FitzSimmons.

Also, we must not forget that Our Lady stressed in the messages that the Novus Ordo Mass is valid and we are to remain in our parish church as a good example of tradition and faith. Therefore, one should balance out their support for the Traditional indult Mass without abandoning their post in their parish church.

In the end, it seems that Divine Providence deemed that Veronica should not be buried with the glory of a beautiful Traditional Latin Mass but to remain at the foot of the cross as a faithful and true soldier of Christ and as an example for us to follow in our parish church.

Veronica of the Cross' day of glory will come when she is raised to the altars of Holy Mother Church, which we believe is sooner than later.
